Built to Last: The Kinetic Software Story in North America

Almost thirty years building software for higher education. Eighteen of them in North America.

Established in 1998, Kinetic Software has been working with North American institutions since 2008. Our conferencing and events software came to North America first, making millions of dollars of summer revenue possible for universities across the U.S. and Canada. Our student housing software travelled a separate route, reaching Canada years earlier and the wider U.S. in 2024. Both are central to what Kinetic does here, and the way each of them arrived explains a good deal about how we work.

Where it started

Kinetic has been building technology for higher education since the late 1990s. Over that time, we became the market leader in our home territory of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), on the strength of a portfolio of specialist, enterprise products that connect into one seamless ‘Kx’ technology ecosystem. Our conferencing and events suite of products helps institutions turn empty bedrooms and event spaces into real revenue while cutting the administrative load on the staff who run it, while giving every guest a stay worth remembering. Our student housing software carries students through application, payment, and arrival, and gives the staff behind them the administration to run all of it, built around what students and staff will need next rather than what they needed last decade.

When we talk about Kinetic, we tend to talk about the longevity of the business and less about what we did with it over that time. As I’m sure you can imagine there are some stories of innovation and excitement to tell. For example, Kinetic was the first to put a student facing web portal in front of housing applicants, the first to bring online payments into the housing journey, the first to move orientation and induction online, and the first to bring serious residence life technology to the phone in a student’s pocket. In fact, a good deal of what the sector now treats as ‘standard’ started at Kinetic.

A good deal of what the sector now treats as ‘standard’ started at Kinetic.”

Why we brought student housing software to North America

In North America, Kinetic had built a strong and growing customer base for our conferencing and events solutions since 2008, and several institutions in Canada were already running our student housing software. We knew the continent, and it knew us.

Over the years we were approached many times by U.S. institutions asking us to make our housing software available to them too. For a long time the honest answer was no.

That answer came down to focus. It is important to me that when an institution chooses Kinetic, we become an extension of their team, and that they have the opportunity to become an extension of ours. That is not a figure of speech. It’s how enterprise student housing software stands the test of time and stays ahead of ‘what’s next’ especially when it’s so deeply embedded into our customers’ operations and their students’ lives. Making KxWelcome, our student housing platform, available in a market the size of the U.S. before we could give it that kind of attention would have been a disservice to the institutions here and to the ones who already rely upon us around the world.

So why did we change our answer? Two things that coincided at once…

First, Kinetic had already partnered with >85% of the universities across its home marketplace in EMEA. It had secured itself as a global leader in this space and was established and trusted in 20 countries around the world, including the US and Canada. It was a natural time for the business to expand further.

Second, the volume and the urgency of the inquiries from the US had increased. Choice in the marketplace had all but disappeared in a short space of time, through a combination of sunsetting software and acquisition activity, and institutions were looking for somewhere to go that was proven, had modern, enterprise level software already, and could offer peace of mind for the long term, and most importantly they wanted not to be a consequence of a software company selling its business.

When an institution chooses Kinetic, we become an extension of their team, and they become an extension of ours.”

What was at stake for institutions

The consequence of Kinetic choosing not to extend KxWelcome to North America would have landed on institutions. Housing and residence life software sits at the core of how a campus operates, and it is mission critical in the plainest sense of the term. Choosing to replace it is a serious undertaking it takes time, planning, and real confidence in whoever you replace it with. Having that decision made for you, on a timeline you did not set and with fewer options in front of you than there were a year earlier, is a hard position to be in.

As a result, something quickly became clear. There were only two suppliers in the world with the technology, the infrastructure, and the track record to satisfy and excite the majority of the U.S. sector. One of them was Kinetic, and Kinetic had never said yes to the U.S.

With that, and more than 85% of the institutions in EMEA having already chosen Kinetic, we answered the call. In 2024 Kinetic made its student housing software, KxWelcome, available across the U.S.

Why being owned by Volaris matters

What sits behind all of that is an owner unlike most others in software. Volaris is a buy and hold forever investor. It does not acquire software companies to sell them on, which means the venture logic of ‘it is fine if this one fails as long as the others succeed’ has no place here. Volaris businesses are well governed, sustainable, and free of the kind of risk a customer would ever have to absorb.

Volaris was already active in North American higher education before we arrived. That has been to Kinetic’s benefit, partnering with some of our sister companies including: AssetWorks, CaterTrax, and more recently Symplicity.

Volaris is an ecosystem of around three hundred software companies, and is itself part of Constellation Software, a family of around a thousand software businesses worldwide. Scale of that kind matters and not one of those businesses, including Kinetic, will ever be sold.

That ownership is where our North American motto comes from. We did not choose “Here for you. Forever.” because it read well on a slide. We chose it because our ownership means we can stand behind it, and because once a University has done the real work of changing systems, a change of hands on our side will never happen.

Once a university has done the real work of changing systems, a change of hands on our side will never happen.”

What’s next

Kinetic has spent almost thirty years being first in this sector, and we have no intention of handing that over now. With the backing of Volaris, expect us to keep building ahead of where the sector currently is, in the student experience, in how housing and residence life teams actually work, and in what arriving on campus feels like for a young person and for the staff supporting them. Expect that work to be led in partnership with institutions across North America and not handed down to them.

Underneath the innovation sits the part that matters the most. Our values, our mission and the peace of mind that with almost 30 years of experience in this very specialist area, Kinetic will be Here For You. Forever.

Common questions

Kinetic Software is owned by Volaris Group, which is itself part of Constellation Software Inc. Volaris is a buy and hold forever investor with an ecosystem of around three hundred software companies, and it does not acquire software businesses in order to sell them on.

No. Because Volaris does not sell the businesses it buys, Kinetic will not be sold. There is no exit to plan around and no acquirer waiting in the wings, which is why institutions can treat a move to Kinetic as the last system change they need to make.

In 2008, when Kinetic brought its conferencing and events software to U.S. institutions running large summer conference operations. Student housing software followed a separate route, reaching Canada first and becoming available across the U.S. in 2024.

KxWelcome is Kinetic’s student housing platform for North American colleges and universities. It covers the student journey from application and payment through arrival and room allocation, along with the administration housing and residence life teams need to run it.

Same company and same ownership, two different market histories. Kinetic has been building higher education software since 1998 and became the market leader across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In North America, conferencing and events came first in 2008, and student housing followed, with KxWelcome available across the U.S. from 2024.

Two core lines. Student housing and residence life software covering application, payment, arrival and ongoing residential operations, and conferencing and events software that helps institutions generate revenue from bedrooms and event spaces outside term time.
